Robert Earl Heffner, a longtime resident of Hatboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016 during a short stay at Abington Hospital.
Robert, known to all as Bob, was born on June 24, 1925 in Philadelphia to Charles and Elsie (Shupe) Heffner, joining his older siblings, W. Herbert, Helen, and Charles, all now deceased. Bob left Roosevelt Junior High School in the 8th grade, and after working various jobs, entered the U.S. Navy during World War II at age 18. As a Navy Seaman First Class, he was based in Okinawa, riding a 45' picket boat, exiting the Navy at War's end.
Returning to Philadelphia, Bob rekindled his love for Ruth Helsen (deceased in 1992), marrying her on Sept. 25, 1948, adopting and raising her daughter, Karen (deceased in 2011) and adding to the family with daughter, Sherry, and son, Robert Jr.
He spent his working life in the carpentry trade, mostly with Jacobsen Acoustical Ceiling Company. Besides his loving son and daughter (with spouse, Stephen Sozanski), survivors include his grandchildren, Colleen Rutter (with spouse, Charles), Brian, Tara, and Michael Heffner, and Kelly Williams (with spouse, Eugene), as well as his grandson, Anthony Bersani Jr., who passed away in 2015. Bob's legacy also includes ten great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends will be received by his family after 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Schneider Funeral Home, 431 N. York Road, Hatboro, where the memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Bob's devotion to Frank Sinatra and Big Band music, donations may be made to his favorite non-commercial public radio station, WRDV at 126 S. York Road, Hatboro.
