Helene Hughes Obituary

Helene Beth Hughes passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday morning, December 2, 2022 at Ann’s Choice in Warminster, PA. She was 80 years old.

Helene was born on July 29, 1942 in Kiev, Ukraine, formerly the USSR to her parents Mary Arseneva and Nickolai Stepanova. After her family left Ukraine as a young child, her mother remarried and she was raised by her mother and late stepfather, Anton Novak. Helene and her family immigrated to the United States when she was 9 years old.

Helene was married to the late William Oliver Hughes in 1962 and they had three children. The family lived in the Crafton section of Pittsburgh, then moved to Baldwin Township, PA and later to Clayville, PA. After the death of her husband William, Helene relocated to Warminster, PA.

Helene was an accomplished gardener and enjoyed beautifying her properties with many gardens and plants. Helene loved to socialize and she could talk with anyone. Helene became a member of multiple Red Hat Societies. Helene was an avid bargain hunter and she enjoyed sharing those funds with her family and friends. Helene was a huge fan of Elvis Presley.

Helene is survived by her brothers: Zeno (Zina) Karpunin and John Nowak; sisters: Luba (Don) Semaninsin, Sophia (Jim) Flinn and Ruth (Hermann) Morgan. Helene was preceded in death by her brother Raymond (Annie) Nowak, Helene leaves behind her sons: William Russell (Lisa) Hughes, Michael Hughes and Scott Hughes; her grandchildren: Jessica (Steven) Huggett and Brandon (Casey) Hughes; her great-grandchildren: Kennedy, Owen and Molly Huggett and 13 nieces and nephews. Helene will be missed by her many friends at Ann’s Choice.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association: www.alz.org/donation
