James “Jim” Robinson, 87, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025 after a life marked by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering passion for his work, family, and friends.
Born on May 30, 1937, in Viola, Wisconsin, Jim grew up in a small town with a graduating class of just 20 students. He was a talented athlete, playing basketball and baseball in high school. He was also active in his church and played trombone in the school band in his younger years.
Jim went on to earn his degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. His career began at Briggs & Stratton, followed by service in the Army, and later roles at Allis-Chalmers and Hercules. However, he found his true professional home at Betz Laboratories in 1966, where he dedicated over 55 years to helping shape the field of industrial water treatment.
A globally respected expert, Jim’s insights were sought after by industry leaders and technical organizations worldwide. He contributed to countless technical papers, books and held leadership roles in several industry committees. His legacy will live on in the people he mentored, the knowledge he shared, and the countless lives he touched.
But beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was known for the friendships he built along the way. Whether at conferences, customer visits, or meeting with friends outside of work, he thrived on connecting with people. Stories of shared beers and memorable conversations with Jim can be heard from friends and colleagues across the globe.
Jim’s dedication extended beyond work—his greatest love was his family. He was a devoted father and a proud grandfather. He never missed a game, a school event, or an opportunity to support his family in any way he could. He always made time for backyard baseball, driveway basketball, and late-night homework help.
He is survived by his children, Sandi (Joe) Robinson and Gregg (Laura) Robinson; his grandson, Drew Robinson; and the mother of his children, Penni Robinson, as well as his former spouse, Virginia Robinson. He also leaves behind a lifetime of friends and colleagues who will forever remember his wisdom, generosity, and humor.
