Janet Ruth Mell, of Hatboro, passed away peacefully in her home on August 3, 2021. She was 87 years old. Janet was born in Philadelphia, PA to Ruth and Santiago "Sam" Minguez on January 28. She was happily married to the late Robert "Bob" Foster Mell with whom she shared 59 years of marriage.
She is survived by her sister, Barbara Powell (husband Hubert, niece Leslie Thompson), Sister-in-law, Sue Gotwalt (nephew Christopher); Brother-in-law, Lowry "Bill" Mell (Janet), daughters, Linda Ackerman (Garry); Debra May (Edward); grandchildren, Eddie, Maggie and Sophia May; and great-grandchildren Lillian and Anastasia Zollo. Janet remained close with all of her cousins. She was preceded in death by Brother-in-law George Gotwalt, nephew Michael Powell and niece Jennifer Gotwalt.
In her youth, Janet sang on the radio as a child and attended Germantown High School where she led the band with pride as drum-majorette. Janet enjoyed music and dancing, was an avid reader, and could create a masterpiece out of anything. Her creativity, and sense of style was something to behold. In her adult years she took up playing tennis at Highpoint, enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, and teaching her grandchildren life lessons. Most of all, she loved her summers spent in Avalon, New Jersey, in a small home built by her parents in the early 1950s that continued to bring joy to the entire family for generations. Here she made lifelong friends and lasting memories.
Janet was a strong-willed individual who was always happy to help out anyone in need. She loved her family and friends dearly as demonstrated by her endless dedication to the care of her husband "Bob" in his final years, and maintaining cross-country friendships.
Whether you knew her as "Mom," "Jan," "Lady Janet," or "Nana," you admired her for her generosity, charm, confidence and strength. She was a "social butterfly," enthusiastic to strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone, an excellent friend and wonderful woman who will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
A private family gathering will take place to celebrate Janet's life. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Dementia Society of America https://www.dementiasociety.org/
