Mary Carnahan Obituary

Mary L. Carnahan, a gifted artist, passionate gardener, and a lifelong lover of beauty in all forms, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025. Born in Norristown, raised in Oaks and Jenkintown, eventually settling in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, she was deeply connected to the community she loved, where she spent much of her life cultivating both her art and a sense of wonder for the world around her.

Mary’s artistic journey began early. She was a proud graduate of Beaver College in 1960, where she studied under acclaimed artists Benton Spruance and John Hathaway, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This foundation led her to a significant role at the Philadelphia Museum of Art post graduation, where she eventually worked as the Assistant Curator of Costume and Textiles from 1965 to 1968. Mary’s attention to detail and passion for preservation were vital in maintaining and restoring one of the largest Costume and Textile Collections in the world.

In her later years, Mary’s creative energy shifted towards her true passion: watercolor painting. Inspired by the beauty of local historic sites, landscapes, pets, florals, and the vibrant gardens she lovingly tended, her work found a place in homes and businesses throughout the region. She exhibited her paintings, won multiple awards, and shared her art through her published calendar which showcased scenes in Hatboro. Her contributions to local art communities, including the Bucks Mont and Doylestown Arts Leagues, were widely recognized.

Mary’s love of gardening was another important part of her life. She found joy and solace in nurturing plants and creating beautiful outdoor spaces, often drawing inspiration from her gardens for her artwork. Her green thumb and eye for natural beauty were reflected not only in her paintings but also in the way she cultivated a sense of peace and tranquility in her surroundings.

Despite facing many health challenges, Mary’s love for life, art, and nature never wavered. She cherished the inspiration found in the simple moments of life—whether through the photos she collected from around the area, her vibrant garden, or her deep love of animals. Alongside her sister Evie, Mary offered a safe, loving home to countless stray cats, all of whom were pampered and adored. The birds and squirrels in the neighborhood also knew where to find a meal, as Mary’s kindness extended to all living creatures.

Her legacy lives on in the beauty she created, the love she shared, and the lives she touched. Mary’s passion for the arts, her quiet generosity, and her devotion to preserving the beauty around her have left an indelible mark on the community she loved.

In honoring her memory, we celebrate the joy Mary found in life’s little treasures—whether through a stroke of watercolor, the care of a garden, a rescued animal, or a quiet moment spent admiring the world’s natural beauty. May we all carry a piece of her kindness, creativity, and love of nature with us.

Mary is survived by her Nephews, James T. Carnahan Jr. and his wife Susan , and niece, Barb A. Carnahan, great niece, Melissa Ellis and her husband Jonathan, and great nephew, James T. Carnahan III and his wife Melissa, seven great-great nieces and nephews and many loving cousins.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers and sister; Jack A. Carnahan,  James T. Carnahan and Dorothy Evelyn Carnahan, and nephew Keith 'Kip' Carnahan.
