Mary Gemmill Obituary

Mary E. Gemmill, age 83, died peacefully on May 8, 2022, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, H. Kenneth, after 48 years of marriage.She was born in Bastrop, Louisiana and was the daughter of the late Rev. Fr. Leslie K. and Cora Elizabeth Young (nee Grove).  Mary spent her younger years between Louisiana and Pennsylvania.

Mary graduated from Roxborough High School in 1956 and entered the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing a week after graduation.  She was president of her class and graduated from HUP in 1959.

Early employment was at the hospital as a staff nurse and head nurse; this was followed by working with Robert Ravdin, MD and Sylvan Eisman, MD in the chemotherapy unit doing research on various drugs/dosages for cancer patients.

 Mary followed her husband Kenneth to Saudi Arabia, where they lived and worked for Raytheon Co. in Jeddah. They were there for 5 years.  Mary worked as the company nurse.

On returning to the U.S., Mary pursued Occupation Health Nursing and achieved certification as a specialist in this field of nursing.  She was president of both the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania chapters of Occupational Health Nurses.

Mary was active with the American Heart Association as an instructor in CPR for the community.  She also ran programs for the American Cancer Society.  She was an active member and Community Co-Chair of the Restoration Advisory Board for the Naval Air Station, Willow Grove during the clean up phase of the airbase.

Mary enjoyed many activities at the Ben Wilson Senior Activity Center and was very active as a volunteer for that organization, as well as President.   Additionally, she was a member of the Damien House #754 Questers.  She also served on the Boards for the William Tennent House Association and Graeme Park.

She was an active Churchwoman for many years, serving as secretary and accounting warden for the Vestry at the Anglican Church of the Incarnation in Quakertown, PA.

 Mary is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Sara), Jeffrey (Diane), granddaughter Paige, step-grandson Nobel Unger (Marissa), step-granddaughter Jonelle Mueller (David), step-granddaughter Lauren Levesque (Nick) and three step-great grandchildren, Gavin, Everett and Addison Levesque.

Interment at Hatboro Cemetery will be private.
